Tourism and the climate emergency: The Tourism Declares Climate Emergency initiative

The tourism sector is a key economic driver worldwide. However, through transportation, hotels and leisure activities, tourism has a significant impact on resource consumption and the climate.

To address this challenge, the global initiative Tourism Declares Climate Emergency was launched in 2019. Its aim is to encourage the tourism industry to take more conscious and active steps in response to the climate crisis. Inspired by climate emergency declarations in other sectors and in line with the Glasgow Declaration adopted at COP26 in 2021, this initiative seeks to build a global network that will guide the tourism sector towards climate neutrality.

The shared goal of Tourism Declares Climate Emergency and the Glasgow Declaration is to reduce the negative impacts of tourism and mitigate climate change through the development of Climate Action Plans. These plans are a critical step towards achieving the 2030 Agenda’s goal of halving emissions in the tourism sector.

The initiative fosters the exchange of knowledge and experience across various industry sectors, with all participants creating transparent climate action plans. By joining the initiative, companies commit to making their practices more sustainable and actively contributing to addressing the climate crisis. Only through collective action can tourism be made sustainable and future-proof. To achieve this, knowledge and experience from different areas of the industry are shared and all participants develop transparent climate action plans. By joining the initiative, companies commit to making their practices more sustainable and actively contribute to solving the climate crisis. Only through joint action can tourism become sustainable and fit for the future.
