"Stop building back Tourism" – Interview with Albert Salman


In an interview with Jon Florin, executive director of fairunterwegs, Albert Salem, Dutch pioneer of tourism critiques and ambassador for tourism that serves the people in the destinations, paints the big picture of tourism. He criticizes the sole focus on the jobs that tourism creates, while neglecting those that are lost due to the development of an export-oriented, capitalistically optimized tourism. „The Maldives prevented [after the tsunami in 2004] many local fishermen and thousands of families to return to their islands. The government and investors seized the islands in order to create high-end tourism resorts. This took jobs rather than created them!”
