He criticizes the sole focus on the jobs that tourism creates, while neglecting those that are lost due to the development of an export-oriented, capitalistically optimized tourism. „The Maldives prevented [after the tsunami in 2004] many local fishermen and thousands of families to return to their islands. The government and investors seized the islands in order to create high-end tourism resorts. This took jobs rather than created them!”
