In collaboration with tour operators, civil society organizations, and South African partners, the Roundtable Human Rights in Tourism conducted an on-site Tourism Impact Assessment. The focus was on human rights risks along classic mid-range group travel routes in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and the Greater Kruger area. The project was co-funded by Brot für die Welt, with its specialist office Tourism Watch actively involved as a core partner in planning and implementation.
The initiative is aligned with the requirements of the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) and follows an internationally recognized methodology. On-site consultations with over 80 stakeholders – including local destination management companies, accommodations, NGOs, transport and activity providers, and community-based projects – revealed urgent challenges related to fair wages, labor rights, community participation, and pricing pressure across the tourism supply chain. At the same time, numerous good and best practices were identified, showing that social responsibility is already being effectively implemented in the sector.
The newly published report consolidates the findings and provides practical recommendations for tour operators – from risk analysis to concrete due diligence measures. The goal: to embed social responsibility in tourism structures in a way that is collaborative, effective, and feasible.
