A National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights in Germany: Interview with Human Rights Commissioner Bärbel Kofler

In Germany, a National Action Plan for Business and Human Rights is about to be adopted. In our interview, Human Rights Commissioner Bärbel Kofler explains what the German government expects of tourism businesses in terms of human rights related due diligence. The primary objective is to prevent human rights violations from happening at all. Companies are expected to introduce procedures to assess their impacts on human rights and to implement measures to prevent negative consequences. They must also introduce grievance mechanisms or take part in existing ones. The National Action Plan also stipulates that the German government will assess if the expectations are met by the industry, and take legal measures if not.
